Look Good … Feel Better
Look Good … Feel Better was a small brochure published by Charles Worthington of
London, British Hairdresser of the Year 1996. It was a practical guide to coping with
hair loss from cancer and its treatment by creating a head wrap from a simple scarf.
Mum loved to have curly hair and all my life she curled it; sleeping in curlers every
night. I always thought of her with curls. Towards the end she wore the scarf wrapped
round her bald head and driving in my sister’s car with the roof down, she said she felt
free. When she died in 1998 I secretly took her curler bag and kept it safely hidden
and often took the curlers out, gazing sadly at the life of these small plastic objects,
my mum’s hair enmeshed, a memory of her, and my loss.
